Man on the Corner
I just returned home from a “quick” trip to Target. On my way, I saw a man who, at first glance, looked to be rather elderly, nodding politely as he accepted a gift from an open car window. You see, he and his dog had claimed this busy parking lot corner to ask for any possible assistance. He held a small, simple sign stating his need for help. For some reason, as I passed by, the sight of this man and his dog brought tears to my eyes. As I made my way to Target, I decided that I would add a few items to my basket for this man and his dog.
I certainly don’t know this man’s story and realize that he may be where he is as the result of some terrible choices along his way. But what I do know is that I am so blessed and I just felt impressed to share some of my blessings.
When I returned to his corner I could see that others had been doing the same as he had several grocery bags by his side. As I pulled up near him it took a bit to get his attention as he sat looking downward, appearing tired and sad. When he did see my gesture to him to come to my open window I saw the eyes of a younger man than first thought. I also saw eyes of gratitude as he accepted my small gift. He then meekly smiled, nodded and said “God Bless”. As I pulled up to leave, I could see him quickly dig into the bag and tell his pup “Let’s see what we have here” (Two cans of dog food included).
This was such a simple thing and I only share my story to maybe encourage someone else to give this a try, too. I think it will bless your heart as I know it did mine ~ Merry Christmas!
