Trick-or-Treat
OK…this is one of those “You really had to be there” kinds of stories, but hopefully you can picture this with me.
This past Saturday…Halloween…I had planned to go out of town but stayed home because of the bad weather we had been experiencing. As a result, I had not gotten any candy for potential trick-or-treaters. So, I suddenly found myself running to get something to hand out at the last minute when the rain seemed to have stopped. I decided to get little bags of fruit snacks and hurried home to be ready for any little super heroes and princesses that might come by.
After returning home, I went to my mailbox at the curb and as I did, a young mom with five little guys all dressed up and carrying their jack-o-lantern buckets came down the street, heading my way. After we exchanged some quick smiles, I asked if they liked fruit snacks. They all grinned and nodded “Yes”, so I invited them to follow me back up the walkway to my front door so I could go inside to get their treats.
They were so cute and sweet that it made me feel really good about joining in their Halloween fun as we all headed toward the treasured fruit snacks. I felt a bit like the Pied Piper (minus the flute)! It made my heart happy. That IS…until I opened my front door and out bolted my Lacee pup, barking and running at lightning speed toward the precious little guys and their mom! I think they startled her and she definitely startled them!
In the blink of an eye my Pied Piper following turned around, all in unison, threw their hands up in the air and started screaming and running back down the curved walkway towards the ‘safe haven’ of the street with my white floppy eared pup close behind. I ran out and quickly retrieved Lacee and apologized profusely. I hurried back inside to put Lacee safely behind closed doors and went to get the fruit snacks in hopes of salvaging the moment with these precious little ones. I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I hoped that we had not scarred them for life!
After grabbing the box of snacks I peeked out the front door, not sure what I would find and to my “Oh, thank goodness” surprise, there they stood, all smiles, with
their jack-o-lantern buckets outstretched, waiting for the fruit snacks. I definitely returned their sweet smiles and began to explain that Lacee thought she was supposed to be my guard dog.
They giggled in agreement and thanked me for their treats. Then off they skipped, heading out for more trick-or-treat adventures.
I then went inside and leaned on my closed door and let out a sigh and, I have to admit, a giggle, too. All was not lost after all. The little super heroes had left smiling and happy and, honestly, that’s what it’s all about.

Your mom was a talented poet . You should compile them all into a book for your family and friends—they came straight from her heart❣️
